Ingredients
Cake Ingredients:
½ C. shortening
1 t. vanilla
2½ C. sifted cake flour
1½ C. sugar
2 t. cocoa
1 t. baking soda
2 eggs
1 t. salt
1 t. vinegar
1 oz. red food coloring
1 C. buttermilk
Frosting Ingredients:
1 C. sugar
3 T. flour
1 C. butter
1 C. milk
1 t. vanilla
Preparation
Cake Preparation: Mix vinegar and soda in a cup and set aside. Cream shortening and sugar. Add whole eggs. Make a paste of cocoa and ½ of the food coloring and add to creamed mixture. Add the rest of the food coloring. Add buttermilk, flour and salt alternately. Add vanilla. Stir soda and vinegar mixture and add last. Mix well. Pour into 3 8" round pans. Bake at 350° for 25 - 30 minutes.
Frosting Preparation: Cook milk and flour until thick. Let cool. Stir while cooling. Cream sugar and butter until fluffy. Add vanilla. Add 1 T. of the flour mixture and mix. Add the rest of the flour mixture gradually, beating all of the time.
Keep refrigerated.
